When a dog, as a beloved family member, goes overboard, it usually causes panic on board. As soon as the boat picks up speed, the dog quickly disappears from sight. A wet dog’s head is hard to spot in the water, even with slight waves and good lighting conditions. A dog life jacket improves visibility and increases the chances of rescuing the dog.

How to Get the Dog Back on Board

Modern cruising yachts, in particular, have a higher freeboard to provide standing headroom below deck. This means the distance from the deck to the water is greater than on older vessels. This allows you to grab the dog from the deck—if necessary, even with a boat hook. Rescue with a line or halyard is also possible.
